How should Buffer evolve its product line?
Buffer is a software company that helps people and businesses manage social media. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

The situation
You are a senior PM at Buffer, and the CEO has asked for a recommendation on the next stage of the product strategy. Buffer is known for a core social media tool, but over the last few months the leadership team has reviewed customer research that suggests people experience their work as a broader flow of needs than Buffer's current product framing cleanly reflects. The research is strong enough to raise strategic questions, but not detailed enough to remove uncertainty. Why now: product, brand, and go to market choices made in the next year could either clarify Buffer's value or make it harder to grow. The team also wants to share an early direction with customers to get feedback, which means the strategy has to be understandable before every detail is locked. The tension is that Buffer has existing customers, existing product equity, and a simple brand people already recognize, yet the current setup may not be the best long term shape for the company. The CEO wants your view on what strategic direction Buffer should take, how to phase it, and what risks to watch.
What to produce
A 2 page strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State the core strategic problem Buffer needs to solve, based on the mismatch between current product framing and the customer research.
- Recommend a product line strategy for the next 12 to 18 months, including what should stay stable and what should change.
- Lay out a sequencing plan that covers product architecture, naming or positioning, and how to gather customer feedback early.
- Explain the main effects on existing customers, internal teams, and Buffer's market story.
- Identify 2 to 3 major risks or open questions, and how Buffer should learn its way through them.
Constraints
- Use only the context given here, do not assume detailed market data, new acquisitions, or a major org expansion.
- Your recommendation must build from Buffer's existing product and brand rather than starting the company over.
- Leadership wants a direction they can share early for feedback, so the plan cannot depend on every detail being finalized first.
Format
Use five sections: diagnosis, strategic recommendation, sequencing, implications, risks and learning plan.
How Buffer actually played it
Buffer's CEO shares a product vision that moves away from one do-all tool toward a platform of social media products: Publish, Reply and Insights, aligned with the jobs of a social media manager. The vision rests on a months-long research project into how customers flow through those jobs. A good case on turning customer-job research into a multi-product strategy.
- Base the product architecture on the customer's job flow, not on features.
- Rename and reposition existing tools as parts of the platform.
- Share an early view of the plan to gather feedback.
- Document the research behind the strategy so it can be revisited.
