The situation
You are the PM for Vanta's core compliance automation product in early 2022. The CRO and Head of Product want your recommendation on whether Vanta should actively pursue a new upmarket motion for mid-market and enterprise buyers who are starting to appear in the pipeline. Until now, growth has come mostly from startup founders who urgently need compliance help and often buy quickly through inbound. That motion is still working, but more competitors are entering the category and some are using lower prices and sharper messaging. Meanwhile, larger prospects are asking for evaluations, yet the team does not know if those deals are early noise or the start of a meaningful new segment. Product leadership is concerned that chasing enterprise too soon could pull the roadmap away from the core startup market. Sales leadership is worried that waiting could mean missing a valuable opening. Assume about 15 percent of qualified inbound now comes from companies above Vanta's current sweet spot, while most revenue still comes from startups. Recommend what Vanta should do over the next two quarters, and how product and GTM should work together if you proceed.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State a clear recommendation, pursue an upmarket test now, wait, or decline, and explain why.
- Define the target segment and the account or buyer signals you would use to qualify which opportunities belong in this motion.
- Lay out a two quarter plan that covers sales involvement, PM and engineering support, and the top product questions to answer.
- Specify the minimum metrics, instrumentation, and decision gates needed to continue, expand, or stop the effort.
- Describe the biggest risks to the core startup business and how you would contain them while learning.
Constraints
- You cannot assume a large new engineering team or a major enterprise feature program in the next two quarters.
- Most current revenue still depends on startup inbound demand, so the core funnel cannot be materially degraded.
- CRM and analytics discipline are immature today, so your plan must work with incomplete data at first and improve measurement quickly.
Format
Use short sections such as recommendation, segment choice, experiment design, metrics, and risks. One simple table is enough if you want to show decision gates.
