Why are new Clubhouse users not coming back?

Clubhouse is a social app where people join or host live drop in audio conversations in topic based rooms. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

The situation

You are a PM responsible for engagement at Clubhouse in early 2021. The app has broken out during the pandemic, invite demand is high, notable speakers still create spikes in usage, and many active users spend long sessions in live rooms. But the data team has raised a concern. New user cohorts are large, yet many people try the app in their first month and do not return consistently in months 2 and 3. Listening time is concentrated among a relatively small core, discovery quality is uneven, and because conversations end when the room ends, users often miss discussions they would have valued. Leadership is split on what to do next. One camp wants to keep pushing top of funnel growth and exclusivity while the app is hot. Another wants to focus on creator economics and monetization. A third argues the product needs stronger repeat use before either of those matters. At the same time, large platforms are starting to launch similar live audio experiences, and as lockdowns ease, users may have less time for long synchronous sessions. The Head of Product asks you for a metrics driven recommendation for the next quarter.

How Clubhouse actually played it

Explains Clubhouse value proposition, journey and key metrics, then why retention collapsed and what PMs can take away.

  • Novelty hides weak retention
  • Track retention cohorts, not downloads
  • Live-only formats struggle without asynchronous value
