How should Duolingo improve daily learning habits?
Duolingo is a consumer app that teaches languages through short mobile lessons. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

The situation
You are an associate PM at Duolingo. The app is attracting lots of curious learners, but many people try a few short lessons and then disappear before language study becomes a routine. Assume about 1 in 4 new learners is still active by day 7. Your GM asks you to recommend one product feature that could make daily practice feel rewarding enough to become a habit, especially for free users who are the top of the funnel for ads and future subscriptions. Why now: the team believes repeat usage is the main bottleneck to growth, but there is internal debate about how far the product should lean into motivation mechanics. Some teammates want stronger rewards and progress cues. Others worry that if the app feels like a game first, users may stop trusting it as a real learning tool. You need to propose a feature that increases return frequency without requiring teachers, big content rewrites, or a separate premium only experience.
What to produce
Write a 1 page product recommendation memo, 500 to 700 words.
Your answer must
- Name the primary user segment you are solving for and the specific behavior problem they face.
- Recommend one feature and describe its core user flow from entry to repeat use.
- Explain why this feature should improve daily retention, using a clear behavior or motivation logic tied to language learning.
- Show how the feature supports Duolingo's business model for ads and subscriptions without making the free product feel worse.
- Define 1 primary success metric, 2 supporting metrics, and 1 guardrail metric.
- List the main risks or tradeoffs and propose a simple experiment or launch plan to test the idea.
Constraints
- Focus on one feature, not a full roadmap.
- The feature must work for free users in the core learning loop.
- Do not depend on live tutors, heavy human moderation, or large new lesson creation.
- Keep the scope realistic for one quarter of product and engineering work.
Format
Use short headings and bullets where helpful.
How Duolingo actually played it
Looks at how Duolingo turns a dull subject into a habit using gems, badges, leaderboards and streaks, and how that supports an ad and subscription model. It also covers social features and the paid AI chatbot tier.
- Engagement mechanics should feed the business model, not sit beside it
- Protective items like streak freezes make a habit harder to break
- Free users who stay engaged become the funnel for paid tiers
