Should Notion formalize community led growth?
Notion is an all in one workspace for notes, docs, wikis, and project collaboration. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.
- Growth strategy
- User segmentation
- Prioritization
- Metrics design
- Cross functional planning
The situation
Assume Notion has strong self serve adoption among students, creators, startups, and remote teams because the product is flexible, easy to try, and useful for both personal and shared work. At the same time, users are already creating tutorials, sharing workflows, and posting templates in online communities that Notion does not fully manage. The CRO and product leadership ask you, the PM for growth in the core workspace, to recommend how Notion should turn this scattered energy into a repeatable go to market motion over the next 12 months. The goal is to grow new user acquisition and improve activation into collaborative team use, without leaning on heavy paid marketing or making the product feel enterprise first. The tension is that community investments can be slow, hard to measure, and easy to overbuild. Several paths look plausible, including deeper in product template discovery, a formal creator or ambassador program, support for regional communities, or simply doubling down on the existing self serve product funnel. You need to choose where to start, what not to do yet, and how Notion will know the bet is working.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page go to market memo.
Your answer must
- State the primary growth objective and the user segment you would target first, and explain why.
- Compare at least three go to market options and recommend one primary bet plus one supporting bet.
- Describe the growth loop from discovery to signup to collaboration to repeat sharing, and note the product touchpoints required.
- Define success metrics, leading indicators, and one or two experiments for the first two quarters.
- Identify the main risks, tradeoffs, and what you would explicitly not invest in yet.
Constraints
- Do not assume a large paid acquisition budget or a major enterprise sales expansion.
- You may propose light product changes, but not a full rebuild of the editor, permissions, or integrations.
- Your plan must work for a horizontal product with many use cases, so avoid a strategy that depends on one niche vertical.
Format
Use clear section headings and concise bullet points where helpful.
