How should Spotify package music discovery?
Spotify is a digital music streaming service where people listen to songs, albums, and playlists on demand. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

The situation
You are a PM on Spotify's music discovery area in 2015. The Head of Product asks you to propose how Spotify should turn its strong but underused recommendation technology into a mainstream feature for everyday listeners. Today, one discovery system lives several layers deep in the app, so even if the recommendations are good, many users never reach them. Separately, a recent seasonal project showed that personalized playlists can feel special, but that format has only been used in limited moments rather than as an ongoing product experience. You need to recommend what to ship next. The team can package discovery in several ways, such as improving the existing discovery page, creating a recurring personalized playlist, or using another lightweight surface. The hard part is balancing approachability, trust, novelty, and habit formation. If the experience feels too complex, people may ignore it. If quality is inconsistent, it could damage confidence in Spotify's personalization more broadly. Marketing and design also want clarity early, because how the feature is framed may matter as much as the algorithms behind it.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page product strategy memo.
Your answer must
- Define the user problem and the target listener segments you would prioritize first.
- Recommend a product format and update cadence, and explain the trade-offs versus at least one credible alternative.
- Propose how you would handle recommendation quality, including novelty versus familiarity and how you would set a launch bar.
- List the core success metrics and guardrail metrics you would use in the first 8 weeks after launch.
- Describe a validation and rollout plan that includes both internal testing and real user feedback, plus the role of design and marketing.
Constraints
- You are packaging existing personalization capabilities, not inventing a brand new recommendation system from scratch.
- The solution should fit naturally within Spotify's current product language, where playlists are already a familiar object for users.
- You cannot rely only on employee opinions, because Spotify staff are heavier music users than the average listener.
- Recommendation quality is promising but imperfect, with some obviously off-target tracks still appearing at times.
Format
Use short sections with clear headings. Bullets are fine if your trade-offs and reasoning stay explicit.
How Spotify actually played it
Spotify explains how Discover Weekly grew from two earlier ideas and how the team tuned length and cadence. It tested with staff and a large listener survey before the wide release.
- Reuse a format people already know
- A weekly cadence gives people a reason to return
- Bring design and marketing in early
