The situation
You are a PM at Zello, and the Head of Product has asked for a recommendation on the next go-to-market focus for the app. Zello is seeing active free usage from many kinds of groups, including communities, hobby users, and some teams that use it for work coordination. The product is easy to try, but leadership is not yet confident about the best path to turn this usage into durable growth and revenue. The question is urgent because resources are limited, and the team cannot simultaneously optimize for every audience. Marketing wants a clearer story for acquisition. Sales sees signs that some organizational users may pay for a more formal offering. Product is debating whether to focus the experience around individual utility, group adoption, or features that better fit business use. Assume Zello has strong engagement in active groups, but monetization is still early and inconsistent. Your job is to recommend which user segment and motion Zello should prioritize next, and how product and go-to-market should work together to support that choice, without losing the simplicity that makes the app easy to adopt.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page strategy memo.
Your answer must
- Define the primary target segment to prioritize next, and name at least one secondary segment to deprioritize for now.
- Explain the core adoption loop you would strengthen, including how a user or group discovers, joins, and brings in others.
- Recommend a monetization path that fits the chosen segment, and explain what would stay free versus what would be paid.
- Identify the main trade-offs among consumer growth, group spread, and business monetization.
- Propose 3 success metrics, including one acquisition metric, one engagement metric, and one monetization signal.
- List the first 2 to 3 product or go-to-market actions you would take in the next quarter.
Constraints
- Use only the information in the prompt, do not assume existing partnerships, pricing, or proprietary enterprise features as facts.
- Do not recommend a strategy that depends on a large field sales team or a full rebuild of the core product.
- Preserve the core push-to-talk simplicity of the product, your plan should not rely on making Zello much more complex to use.
Format
Use five sections with short headers: choice, why now, adoption loop, monetization approach, metrics and next steps.
