The situation
It is mid 2018, and Daniel Ek has asked your product strategy team for a recommendation on podcasts. Spotify added podcasts to its app a few years ago and is seeing encouraging signs, listeners who use podcasts spend more time on the platform and podcast listening is taking a growing share of total audio time. But Apple still has the strongest position in podcasts, especially on iPhone, where its app is bundled, familiar, and well integrated with the rest of the device experience. At the same time, the market is hard to read. Podcast usage is rising quickly, yet monetization is still weak compared with radio, and many investors and operators think the opportunity is being overstated. Assume leadership is willing to invest up to $500M over three years if there is a credible strategy. You need to recommend whether Spotify should make podcasts a major strategic priority, and if so, where to play in the value chain, creation, distribution, creator tools, and monetization, to build a durable advantage over Apple without undermining the core music product.
What to produce
A 1 to 2 page strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State the core problem Spotify is trying to solve and define a 24 month goal with 2 to 4 success metrics.
- Map the podcast value chain and recommend the 2 to 3 highest priority areas where Spotify should invest, with clear reasoning.
- Identify the target users or segments to win first, and explain how your plan changes their behavior compared with Apple.
- Evaluate at least three strategic options, including product improvements and at least one content, creator tools, or platform move, then choose one approach.
- Explain the main trade offs, risks, and what you would explicitly not do in the next 24 months.
Constraints
- Assume Spotify can invest up to $500M over three years, with visible progress expected in 12 and 24 months.
- Apple keeps its distribution advantage on iPhone, including a built in podcasts app and strong device integrations.
- Near term podcast monetization is immature, so the plan cannot rely on large direct profit in the first 24 months.
- Your recommendation must fit within Spotify's existing listening app and cannot depend on launching a separate podcast only consumer app.
Format
