How should Duolingo improve streak retention?
Duolingo is a language learning app that uses short lessons, reminders, and game-like features to help people practice every day. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

The situation
You are the PM for learner motivation at Duolingo, and your director asks for a recommendation on how to improve the streak experience. The team believes streaks matter because daily consistency is critical for language learning, but the current experience may work differently for different learners. New learners seem to need a strong feeling of progress and momentum in their first few days, while experienced learners may be more motivated by protecting a long streak they have already built. At the same time, a broken streak can feel discouraging, and too much flexibility could make the habit feel less meaningful. There is already a Streak Freeze mechanic that protects one missed day, but the team is not sure whether to invest next in making streak extension feel more rewarding, in making streaks more forgiving, or in another idea within the streak area. Growth leadership wants a metrics driven recommendation for the next experiment. Assume day 7 retention for brand new learners is 25%, and 40% of current daily active learners have a streak of 7 days or more.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page product strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State the product goal and define one primary success metric, plus 2 to 4 guardrail metrics.
- Segment learners in a way that is relevant to streak behavior, and explain how motivation may differ across those segments.
- Compare at least two plausible streak interventions or hypotheses, including one that targets early habit formation and one that targets streak preservation or flexibility.
- Recommend one experiment to run first, with a clear test design, target population, decision criteria, and expected risks.
- Explain the main tradeoffs, including the risk of optimizing for streaks in a way that could hurt real learning or user trust.
Constraints
- You can only change the streak experience and related post lesson or streak settings surfaces this quarter, not lesson content or the broader notification system.
- Engineering and design capacity allow one medium sized experiment in the next 6 weeks.
- The solution must preserve the idea that daily practice matters and cannot make missed practice feel identical to completed practice.
Format
Use sections: goal, diagnosis, options, metrics and experiment, recommendation, risks.
How Duolingo actually played it
Duolingo explains the research behind its streak and the experiments that improved it. Showing a streak animation raised the chance a brand new learner was still active 7 days later by 1.7 percent, and a related change increased daily active learners by 0.38 percent. The post links behavioral psychology with tested outcomes.
- Tie a habit feature to behavior research and testing.
- Small relative lifts at scale matter.
- Milestones that feel different keep motivation up.
