Where Should Early Roblox Place Its Bet?
Roblox is an online platform where people can create, share, and play user made 3D experiences with friends. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.
- strategic prioritization
- platform thinking
- marketplace economics
- metrics design
- risk management
The situation
It is shortly after Roblox's early launch. A small but highly engaged community is gathering in a few multiplayer experiences, and some users are already showing more interest in building than just playing. Leadership believes the long term opportunity is much bigger than a single game, an online place where people can create, socialize, and move across many experiences. But the company is still tiny, the market is crowded with virtual worlds and game sites, and there is no guarantee users will keep coming back. David Baszucki asks you to recommend the company's primary strategic focus for the next 18 months. Roblox could invest most heavily in first party experiences to drive usage now, in creator tools and a virtual economy to unlock more content, in social identity features to deepen retention, or in trust and safety systems that make the platform viable for younger users and their parents. The tension is that Roblox competes for user attention, but winning attention may depend on a strong supply of creator content and a safe environment. Leadership needs a strategy, a sequence, and a clear view of tradeoffs.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State the primary strategic objective for the next 18 months and the main user segment you are optimizing for first.
- Evaluate at least 3 strategic options, recommend 1, and explain why the others should be secondary for now.
- Describe the core flywheel you expect to create across players, creators, content supply, social behavior, and monetization.
- Lay out a phased plan for the first 2 to 3 investments or launches, including key dependencies between them.
- Define 4 to 6 success metrics, with at least one each for content supply, user engagement, trust and safety, and monetization or creator earnings.
- Identify the biggest risks and second order effects of your plan, and how you would mitigate them.
Constraints
- Assume Roblox can only make one major strategic bet at a time over the next 18 months.
- The platform must remain accessible on consumer hardware and internet conditions common in the mid 2000s.
- The audience skews young, so any plan must preserve strong trust and safety standards.
- You cannot rely on a large marketing budget or exclusive licensed content to make the strategy work.
Format
Use short sections with headings: objective, options, recommendation, roadmap, metrics, risks.
