How can LinkedIn unblock content-led growth?
LinkedIn is a professional network where people manage work identities, build connections, share knowledge, and find career opportunities. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.
- growth strategy
- AI product sense
- metric design
- trade off judgment
- trust and safety
The situation
It is early 2023, and you are a PM in LinkedIn's growth and content area. A VP asks you for a recommendation on whether LinkedIn should use newly available generative AI capabilities to improve member and visitor growth. LinkedIn already has strong reasons for members to keep profiles updated and engage with their network, but creation of useful public professional content is uneven, concentrated among a small group, and often hard for ordinary members to start. At the same time, leadership sees a chance to attract more people from the open web, not just through direct brand traffic, if LinkedIn can increase the amount of high quality professional content that non members can discover and trust. The tension is that AI could lower the effort to create content, but it could also flood the platform with generic or misleading material, weaken professional trust, and create little real value for readers. Your job is to recommend where AI should fit in the growth loop, what product to test first, and how LinkedIn should judge whether it is actually creating durable growth rather than short term noise.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page product strategy memo.
Your answer must
- Define the growth loop you are trying to improve, including the user action, the distribution step, and the conversion step, and identify the current bottleneck.
- Propose one primary AI enabled product concept for LinkedIn, and briefly compare it with two credible alternatives you chose not to prioritize.
- Explain the target user segment or segments, and the value exchange for both existing members who create content and new visitors who discover it.
- Describe an MVP, including the user experience, trust and safety guardrails, and what content should or should not be public in the first release.
- Specify success metrics and an experiment plan, including at least one metric for content creation, one for visitor acquisition, one for conversion to sign up, and one for quality or trust.
- Call out the biggest risks, dependencies, and trade offs, and explain how you would test your riskiest assumption first.
Constraints
- Your proposal must preserve LinkedIn's professional trust and avoid encouraging spammy or deceptive AI content.
- Do not rely on paid acquisition or a major redesign of LinkedIn's jobs product, profile product, or core feed ranking for the first release.
- Keep the first version scoped to one product area and realistic to pilot within two quarters.
- Assume engineering and design resources are meaningful but not unlimited, so you must prioritize a narrow first bet.
Format
Use headings such as problem, loop, users, options, recommendation, MVP, metrics, and risks.
How LinkedIn actually played it
Walks step by step through a loop LinkedIn launched in March 2023 that uses AI help to create content which search engines index and which draws in new members. Shows how an old user-generated content loop can be rebuilt with AI.
- Compare a new AI feature to a known loop shape
- Look for the constraint step that AI relieves
