The situation
Your director asks you to write a recommendation for Monzo's next lending adjacent opportunity. Monzo is hearing in customer conversations that some people want a simple way to spread the cost of planned or unexpected purchases, but the team's current products do not seem to fully solve that job. At the same time, entering a new borrowing category would pull Monzo into a more sensitive space, with higher expectations around customer understanding, eligibility, and responsible use. Why now: cost pressure is making flexible cash flow tools more relevant, and leadership wants to know whether this is a real unmet need worth pursuing or a noisy signal that can be handled inside the existing product set. The hard part is that the evidence is mixed in form, not volume. You have some early qualitative research, internal product usage signals, and a broad sense that customers already use other borrowing options outside Monzo to meet this need. You need to advise whether Monzo should invest in this area, what problem to target first, and how to validate demand without rushing into a harmful or low trust credit experience.
What to produce
A 1 to 2 page product recommendation memo.
Your answer must
- Define the target customer need and the main alternatives customers likely use today.
- Present 2 or 3 strategic options, including at least one option that does not involve launching a new product, and recommend one.
- Explain what qualitative and quantitative evidence you would use or collect to make the decision, and why both are needed.
- Propose a first test or MVP, with key success signals and key customer risk or harm signals.
- Call out the most important regulatory, eligibility, and transparency considerations for any borrowing related proposition.
Constraints
- Base your reasoning only on the summary provided and general knowledge of Monzo as a digital bank, do not assume specific facts that are not in evidence.
- Focus on existing Monzo customers and an in app experience, not a broad market expansion strategy.
- Any proposal that involves borrowing must explain how eligibility and repayment terms would be made clear before a customer signs up or commits.
Format
Use short headings and bullets. A simple options table is encouraged.
How Monzo actually played it
A researcher and a product manager explain why Monzo built a pay-later product and how mixed-method discovery shaped it. Early customer conversations showed pay later was a strong need that Monzo's existing products did not meet, which led to Flex. A good case of how research drives the decision to enter a new product category.
- Let customer research reveal unmet needs your current products do not serve.
- Mix qualitative and quantitative methods during discovery.
- Anchor the new product to a need customers already try to solve with other borrowing options.
- Share regulatory and eligibility caveats up front for credit products.
