The situation
You are a senior PM in Monzo's homeownership team, which includes the mortgage product. Your lead asks you for a recommendation before the next leadership review. The team has been shipping launches, but the core signs of product health are not keeping up, especially customer engagement and retention. The worry is that the team may be getting better at delivery than at solving the right customer problem. This is hard because mortgages are an important product area, so continuing to launch can signal momentum, while changing direction can look like loss of confidence. At the same time, if customers are underwhelmed, shipping more of the current roadmap could compound the problem and consume engineering time that might be better used elsewhere. You do not yet have a proven diagnosis for why customers are not sticking with the product. Your lead wants a clear point of view on what the team should do next: keep shipping, narrow the scope to focus on the most important customer problem, or change team focus while you build a stronger understanding of what customers need and what good should look like.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page strategy memo for Monzo leadership.
Your answer must
- State the product problem in one or two sentences, separating symptoms from likely causes.
- Lay out three strategic paths, keep shipping, narrow scope, and change team focus, with the main upside, downside, and risk for each.
- Recommend one path and explain why it is best given the weak engagement and retention signals.
- Define what great should look like for the mortgage product in customer and business terms, and name 3 to 5 metrics or indicators you would use to judge progress.
- Describe the first decisions, learning work, and cross functional actions you would take next, including how you would get leadership alignment on the plan.
Constraints
- You know launches have happened, but the exact reason for weak engagement and retention is still unclear.
- Any recommendation must be credible to executives because it could affect engineering allocation across teams.
- Base your answer only on the information in the prompt, do not assume hidden market facts, partnerships, or performance data.
Format
Use short sections such as problem, options, recommendation, success definition, and next actions.
How Monzo actually played it
Monzo's homeownership team describes pausing engineering on its mortgage product for two months in February 2025 because they were shipping launches while engagement and retention lagged. Engineers moved to another team while the group diagnosed where customers were underwhelmed and reset strategy. The post gives a framework for spotting when you have outrun your understanding and getting executive sponsorship for a pause.
- Watch for the trap of celebrating launches while engagement and retention stall.
- A time-boxed pause can create room to diagnose and reset.
- Get sponsorship with clear goals and a deadline to avoid a slow deprioritisation.
- Use the pause to define what great looks like for the product.
