Where should Monzo start in mortgages?
Monzo is a UK digital bank that offers current accounts and other personal finance tools through a mobile app. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.
- customer segmentation
- discovery design
- prioritisation
- product strategy
- structured communication
The situation
A product leader at Monzo has asked you to shape the companys first focused move into mortgages and the wider home ownership journey. Leadership sees housing as one of the biggest financial jobs customers face, but the market is crowded, highly regulated, and already served by banks, brokers, comparison tools, and specialist apps. Inside Monzo, there are competing views on where to start. Some people want to help customers get ready to buy, some want to support people choosing a mortgage, and some want to help existing homeowners stay on top of their mortgage after completion. The team has instinct and general market knowledge, but not enough fresh evidence to say which customer group has the sharpest unmet need that Monzo can uniquely serve. You are the PM asked to recommend what customer segment and problem space Monzo should prioritise first, and how to validate that choice before committing to build. The tension is speed versus confidence, choosing too slowly could miss momentum, but choosing too quickly could send the team after a problem that is already well served elsewhere.
What to produce
Write a 2 page product strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State the decision that needs to be made now, and what should be left for a later phase.
- Define at least 3 customer segments or life stages within the mortgage journey, compare them, and choose 1 to prioritise first.
- Propose a discovery plan that uses both qualitative interviews and a broader quantitative survey, with the main questions each method should answer.
- Explain how you would turn research into a ranked list of customer needs, including a way to assess how well existing services already meet each need today.
- Recommend 1 initial product direction for the chosen segment, and include the main risks, trade offs, and 2 to 3 learning metrics for the next step.
Constraints
- Keep the initial focus to a single product area that could fit naturally inside the existing Monzo app and brand.
- Do not assume Monzo can launch a full end to end mortgage product, replace advisers, or run several large bets in parallel as a first step.
- Your recommendation should be realistic for an early stage exploration in a regulated market where trust and clarity matter.
Format
Use headings: decision, segments, discovery plan, prioritisation method, initial product direction, risks and metrics.
How Monzo actually played it
Monzo's team gives a behind-the-scenes account of building a feature that lets customers see a mortgage from any lender in the Monzo app. A three-month discovery with a researcher, a designer and a special projects lead began with interviews of almost 50 customers across saving, buying and managing life stages, which surfaced 35 needs. A survey of over 2,000 people then rated how well each need was served today. A strong example of using mixed methods to choose which segment and need to build for first.
- Run foundational discovery even when you think you understand the market.
- Use interviews to find needs and a large survey to rank them.
- Ask how well existing services already serve each need to find the gaps.
- Decide which segment to build for first before designing the proposition.
