How should Notion repackage its plans?
Notion is a workspace app where people and teams create docs, wikis, projects, and databases in one place. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

- Written communication
The situation
You are a PM at Notion preparing a recommendation for the founders, growth, sales, and finance teams. Notion's pricing structure has not been meaningfully updated in over two years. Since then, remote and hybrid work have become mainstream, more people are discovering Notion through personal organizing and creator content, and many workspaces now start with one person before spreading to a startup or a cross-functional team. At the same time, larger companies are asking for stronger admin, security, and analytics controls, while self-serve users expect generous free access. Notion currently offers a free personal plan, a paid Personal Pro plan, a Team plan, an Enterprise plan, and an Education plan. Leadership believes the current lineup no longer cleanly matches how customers adopt and expand, but there is disagreement about whether to widen free access, how to separate small team needs from larger company needs, and how to avoid confusing or upsetting existing customers. Assume you cannot run a long product rebuild, only a pricing, packaging, and positioning change using mostly existing capabilities.
What to produce
Write a 1 to 2 page product strategy memo recommending how Notion should redesign its plan packaging.
Your answer must
- Define the main customer segments and explain how their needs differ, including the path from individual use to team adoption.
- Recommend a plan lineup and the key boundaries between free and paid plans, with clear reasoning for what belongs in each tier.
- Explain the expected effects on acquisition, conversion, expansion, and retention, and name at least 3 success metrics.
- Address how existing customers should be handled, including current subscribers and education users, with a migration and communication approach.
- Identify the top risks of your recommendation and give a mitigation for each.
Constraints
- Do not assume major new product development beyond packaging, naming, and placing mostly existing capabilities into plans.
- Keep a meaningful free option for individual users.
- Minimize disruption and surprise for existing paying customers and workspace admins.
Format
Use sections titled customer segments, recommendation, plan boundaries, expected impact, migration, and risks.
