Should Meta enter online dating?

The situation
Your manager in Meta's consumer product organization has asked for a short strategy memo. Some leaders believe Meta could expand into online dating by using identity, social connections, and distribution across its existing apps. Others worry that dating is a different use case, with higher trust and privacy expectations, and that a focused incumbent like Tinder may be hard to dislodge. Why now? Online social behavior is shifting, and Meta is looking for ways to deepen engagement beyond its current core uses. Dating is attractive because matching can benefit from large networks, profiles, and repeat visits. But entering the category could create brand risk if users feel their social life and dating life are too tightly linked. The team does not want a broad market report. They need a product strategy view on a single question: should Meta invest in a dating platform built from its existing ecosystem, or stay out for now? Assume you have no internal numbers beyond Meta's broad scale and Tinder's position as a well known incumbent.
What to produce
A 1 to 2 page strategy memo.
Your answer must
- State the decision to be made and the 3 to 4 criteria you will use to judge it.
- Identify at least 3 Meta assets that could help in dating and at least 2 gaps or risks that could hurt it.
- Compare Meta with Tinder and name at least 2 strengths the incumbent likely has.
- Make a clear recommendation, go, no go, or limited test, and explain the main tradeoffs.
- Define a starting target user and 2 to 3 early success metrics or milestones.
Constraints
- Use only capabilities that could plausibly come from Meta's existing consumer platforms and brand, no acquisitions or major partnerships.
- Do not assume access to proprietary market size, revenue, or performance data. If you use numbers, label them as assumptions.
- Keep the scope to a consumer dating offering, not a broader social, messaging, or payments strategy.
- Your plan must account for privacy and trust concerns that come from linking dating activity with existing social identities.
Format
Use clear headings. A strong structure is: decision and criteria, user and market, Meta assets and gaps, Tinder comparison, recommendation, metrics and risks.
How Meta actually played it
A practice product strategy question about whether Meta should build a dating platform. It lists Meta's strengths such as brand and integration with existing platforms against the incumbent Tinder.
- List assets and gaps before recommending
- Consider network effects of existing products
- Name the incumbent and its strengths
