How should Airbnb get more hosts fast?
Airbnb is an online marketplace where people list homes or rooms for short term stays and travelers book them. Answer this product management case and get it graded line by line against a weighted rubric.

- Segmentation
- Go-to-market
- Experiment design
- Prioritization
The situation
You are the PM working with Airbnb's founders in the early days. Airbnb is seeing encouraging signs from the guest side: people who try it like it, and some bookings repeat. But the marketplace still feels thin because too few people are listing homes or spare rooms. Without more supply, guests do not see enough choice, and host growth may stall because new hosts cannot yet count on steady demand. The founders want a practical recommendation for the next planning cycle. They are not asking for a broad product roadmap. They want a focused plan to unlock host growth quickly, using the few resources the team has. The tension is that many things could be improved, from product polish to trust to awareness, but the team can only chase one clear move right now. Assume you can only pursue one host growth initiative before the next planning review.
What to produce
Write a one page go-to-market memo for the founders.
Your answer must
- Name the main growth bottleneck and explain why it is the right problem to solve now.
- Define the first host segment you would target, including the listing type or host profile and why this segment is attractive.
- Recommend one primary way to reach and motivate that segment, including the value proposition and why it fits current constraints.
- Propose one or two lightweight experiments, with success metrics, leading indicators, and a clear stop or scale decision.
- Call out the biggest risks, tradeoffs, and what you would explicitly not prioritize in this cycle.
Constraints
- No meaningful paid marketing budget is available.
- Engineering bandwidth is limited, so anything that takes months is out of scope.
- Airbnb is not a well known brand yet.
- Guest interest exists, but demand is not yet strong enough to pull large numbers of hosts in by itself.
Format

How Airbnb actually played it
Explains how Airbnb solved a supply shortage by letting hosts cross-post to Craigslist and why this growth move beat a larger competitor.
- Solve the actual bottleneck, supply here
- Borrow audiences that already exist
- Scrappy tactics are fine when they validate demand
