What this question tests
Tests strategic decision making under uncertainty: justifying roadmap investment using market signals, internal economics, and competitive evidence.
How to approach it
- Gather market and customer signal: how many frontier model customers are asking for better multimodal or coding eval workflows and how urgently.
- Check internal economics: current cost and cycle time of eval work for these data types versus what a better workflow could save.
- Gather competitive evidence: whether competitors are already differentiating on this and whether losing deals can be traced to this gap.
- Weigh this investment against other roadmap candidates using a common framework, like expected revenue impact per engineering month.
- Make a recommendation under uncertainty, for example a scoped pilot investment rather than a full build, if signal is strong but not yet proven.
- Define what evidence in the next quarter would confirm the bet was right or should be unwound.
What a strong answer includes
- Uses internal economics, cost and cycle time savings, as concrete evidence, not just customer requests, to justify the investment.
- Proposes a scoped pilot rather than a full commitment when the evidence, while directionally positive, is not yet conclusive.
- Names a specific way to check competitive loss, tracing lost deals to this capability gap, rather than assuming competitor pressure.
Common mistakes
- Recommending full investment based only on customer requests without checking internal economics or competitive evidence.
- Presenting a recommendation without acknowledging the uncertainty or defining what would change the decision.
Likely follow-up questions
- What data would most quickly tell you this bet was wrong?
- How would you compare this investment against another roadmap candidate with a similar cost?
