What this question tests
Prioritization framework under real resource constraints right after a pilot launch.
How to approach it
- Clarify bug severity: does it affect core functionality, data integrity, or just an edge case.
- Clarify feature urgency: is it needed for a committed milestone or a competitive response.
- Apply a simple framework: severity times frequency for the bug, value times urgency for the feature.
- Default toward fixing bugs affecting trust or core function post-launch, since pilot users set lasting impressions.
- State the exception where the feature would win, e.g. a rare edge-case bug versus a milestone-critical feature.
- Note how you'd communicate the decision and timeline to both stakeholders.
What a strong answer includes
- Uses a concrete framework, severity times frequency versus value times urgency, instead of an unstated gut call.
- Explains why early pilot bugs carry outsized weight: they shape first impressions with a small, vocal user base.
- States the specific condition where the feature would win instead, avoiding a one-size-fits-all answer.
- Addresses communicating the tradeoff to the stakeholder who doesn't get what they want.
Common mistakes
- Giving a blanket rule, always fix bugs first, without conditions.
- Not addressing how the decision gets communicated to stakeholders.
Likely follow-up questions
- What if the bug only affects 1% of pilot users, does that change your answer?
- How would you decide if you had two engineers, not one?
