What this question tests
Execution and strategy: reviewing an existing feature critically and defining a safe, measurable rollout plan.
How to approach it
- Clarify what 'suggested products' means here: on product pages, cart, or post-purchase emails, and pick one surface.
- Audit the current logic: is it based on co-purchase data, browsing history, or manual curation, and check for obvious quality issues.
- Define review criteria, such as relevance, margin, and inventory availability, before approving the list.
- Propose a staged rollout: A/B test on a subset of traffic before full release.
- Define success metrics, like click-through rate on suggestions and incremental revenue per session.
What a strong answer includes
- Insists on reviewing recommendation quality (relevance, staleness, out-of-stock items) before any rollout, not just shipping it.
- Proposes a concrete A/B test design, e.g. 10 percent holdout group to measure incremental lift.
- Flags a risk, such as suggesting low-margin or irrelevant items hurting trust, and how to catch it.
- Uses an assumed target, e.g. a 3 percent lift in average order value, to frame success.
Common mistakes
- Shipping the list to 100 percent of users without testing.
- Ignoring data quality issues behind the 'suggested products' logic.
- No clear metric to judge whether the rollout succeeded.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you handle a supplier complaining their product isn't recommended enough?
- What would you do if the test shows no lift?
- How do you balance relevance versus margin in ranking suggestions?
