What this question tests
Metrics and stakeholder thinking, translating an executive's goals into the right dashboard for a specific funnel.
How to approach it
- Clarify who the executive is and what decisions they make, e.g. a VP of Retail deciding where to invest in checkout improvements.
- Identify the top level metric they care about, checkout conversion rate and revenue per session.
- Build the metric tree beneath it, cart abandonment rate, payment failure rate, and average time to complete checkout.
- Segment key views by device, new versus returning customer, and payment method to reveal where problems concentrate.
- Decide on cadence and alerting, daily trend lines plus anomaly alerts for sudden conversion drops.
- Mock the layout: top line KPIs at a glance, trend charts below, and drill-down segments on demand.
What a strong answer includes
- Distinguishes the executive dashboard, which needs 3 to 5 headline numbers, from an analyst dashboard with many charts.
- Picks metrics an executive would act on, like conversion rate and abandonment rate, not vanity counts like total page views.
- Adds a guardrail metric, such as payment failure rate by processor, to catch technical issues early.
- Explains the segmentation choice, device and payment method, because those are where checkout problems usually hide.
Common mistakes
- Building an analyst-style dashboard with too many metrics for an executive audience.
- Not tying metrics to decisions the executive would actually make.
- Ignoring segmentation, showing only an aggregate conversion number.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which single metric would you put at the very top.
- How would you alert the executive to a sudden drop.
- How would this dashboard differ for a mobile app versus desktop.
