What this question tests
Weighing a feature's engagement upside against user annoyance and cost, and choosing metrics that catch both.
How to approach it
- State the goal of autoplay, increasing video consumption and time spent without hurting trust or data costs.
- Define the primary metric, video completion rate and total watch time per session.
- Define guardrails, uninstall rate, data usage complaints, and the opt out rate for the autoplay setting.
- Propose a gradual A/B test measuring both engagement lift and guardrail movement.
- Decide launch criteria, ship only if watch time rises without a meaningful rise in opt outs or complaints.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific primary metric, average watch time per session, alongside a specific guardrail, autoplay opt out rate, not just engagement.
- Calls out mobile data cost as a real user cost, especially in markets with expensive data, proposing a Wi-Fi only default there.
- Sets a numeric bar for shipping, for example a 5 percent lift in watch time with opt out rate under 3 percent, marked as an assumption.
Common mistakes
- Only measuring engagement upside and ignoring cost to users like data usage.
- No mention of segmenting the rollout by market or connection type.
- No clear go or no go bar for the test result.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you handle markets where mobile data is expensive?
- What would you do if watch time rose but complaints also rose?
