What this question tests
Tests execution judgment under an external shock, renegotiating scope and timeline while protecting the customer relationship and contract terms.
How to approach it
- Identify what actually changed: team capacity, dependencies, or the customer's own environment, remote work or budget freezes.
- Check the contract: what's fixed, deadline and scope, versus what's negotiable, delivery format or a phased rollout.
- Communicate early: tell the customer about the risk before it becomes a missed deadline, and propose a revised plan.
- Re-scope to a minimum viable delivery that meets the contract's core intent, deferring nice-to-haves to a later phase.
- Track progress with a weekly risk log and a revised delivery date with buffer, confirmed by customer sign-off.
What a strong answer includes
- Prioritizes early, transparent communication with the customer over silently missing the deadline.
- Proposes a concrete de-scoping technique, MVP delivery plus phased rollout, instead of just working harder.
- Treats the contract's terms as a real constraint to check rather than ignoring them.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the team can just push through without renegotiating anything with the customer.
- Not addressing the contractual or legal angle at all.
