What this question tests
Ability to spot a genuine gap in a familiar product and articulate why it matters.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific product you use regularly and know well enough to critique with real detail.
- Identify one concrete missing functionality, grounded in a real recurring frustration, not a hypothetical.
- Explain the user impact: what workaround you currently use and how much friction or time it costs.
- Propose a simple version of the missing functionality, scoped realistically rather than a sweeping redesign.
- Note why the product likely hasn't built this yet, showing awareness of trade-offs the team may have made.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific, believable gap, e.g. no way to snooze a specific notification type, rather than a vague complaint.
- Describes a concrete current workaround, showing the pain point is real and experienced firsthand.
- Proposes a scoped, buildable fix rather than an unrealistic full feature suite.
- Shows empathy for why the team might not have built it yet, like a low-priority niche use case or a platform limitation.
Common mistakes
- Naming a feature that already exists, showing insufficient familiarity with the product.
- Proposing something too broad or vague to be evaluated as a real gap.
Likely follow-up questions
- Why do you think this gap hasn't been addressed already?
- How would you validate other users feel this gap too?
