What this question tests
Growth strategy: breaking a top-line target into a lever tree and defending a recommendation with rough numbers.
How to approach it
- Clarify the growth metric (revenue, subscribers, or engagement) and the timeframe for the 20%.
- Break growth into levers: new user acquisition, free-to-paid conversion, churn reduction, and ARPU.
- Roughly size which lever has the most headroom, such as converting more free users to paid.
- Pick 1 to 2 levers to go deep on, e.g. bundling or regional pricing tiers in underpenetrated markets.
- Propose a concrete initiative with reasoning and a rough number behind it.
- Flag risks, such as cannibalizing existing paid subscribers with a new bundle.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks a metric (e.g. premium subscriber count) rather than leaving 'grow' vague.
- Uses a simple lever tree: new users times conversion to paid times retention times ARPU.
- Backs the recommendation with a plausible number, e.g. assumes converting 2% more of 300 million free users to paid gets close to 20%.
- Considers a non-obvious lever such as podcast or audiobook bundling in underpenetrated markets.
Common mistakes
- Listing every possible growth idea without prioritizing.
- Ignoring that 20% is a specific, measurable target and never doing rough math against it.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which lever would you bet the team's roadmap on for the next two quarters?
- How would you know within a month if the price change wasn't working?
