What this question tests
Tests whether the candidate has a repeatable, defensible prioritization framework, not just gut feel or reacting to the loudest voice.
How to approach it
- State the inputs you gather: customer feedback, usage data, business goals like revenue and retention, and technical debt from engineering.
- Name the framework: a reach-impact-confidence-effort style scoring, weighed against a north-star metric or quarterly goal alignment.
- Explain how you separate strategic bets from quick wins, running both in parallel rather than only chasing high-effort, high-impact items.
- Describe stakeholder input: how sales or support signals are incorporated without letting the loudest voice override data-backed priority.
- Address trade-offs: how you communicate and defend what didn't make the cut, since prioritization is as much about saying no.
- Give a concrete example: a real instance where the framework changed what you built first, including the outcome.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific, real framework rather than a vague claim of prioritizing based on impact, showing repeatable process.
- Explicitly balances quick wins against strategic bets, avoiding an all-or-nothing prioritization style.
- Addresses how competing stakeholder voices are weighed objectively rather than by seniority or volume.
- Grounds the answer in one concrete real example with a measurable outcome.
Common mistakes
- Giving a purely abstract framework with no real example of it being applied.
- Implying priority is set by whoever asks loudest rather than a consistent process.
Likely follow-up questions
- Tell me about a time you deprioritized something a stakeholder really wanted.
- How do you handle a mandate from leadership that conflicts with your data-backed priorities?
