What this question tests
Zero to one product strategy: defining mission, goal, and metrics in the right order for a brand new business line.
How to approach it
- Mission: state the purpose in user terms, help people buy and sell locally within their trusted Facebook community, distinct from Craigslist or eBay's anonymous model.
- Goal: pick one strategic focus for the first year, like becoming the default place Facebook users go for local secondhand commerce.
- Users: local buyers and sellers, especially casual sellers who already post items for sale in Groups today.
- Success metrics: transaction volume (or listing to contact rate if payments are not yet built), and repeat seller rate.
- Guardrail: trust and safety, since local commerce with strangers carries scam and safety risk that must be designed for from day one.
- Sequence: launch listings and discovery first, defer in-app payments and shipping until trust in the core experience is proven.
What a strong answer includes
- Anchors the mission in Facebook's real differentiator, existing local trust and social graph, versus anonymous marketplaces (common knowledge positioning).
- Sequences the build correctly, discovery and trust first, monetization and payments later, a realistic zero to one path.
- Sets a guardrail metric, safety reports per transaction, appropriate for a product connecting strangers locally.
Common mistakes
- Jumping straight to payments and logistics infrastructure before proving core listing and discovery demand.
- No safety or trust guardrail for a product involving in-person meetups with strangers.
- Vague mission statement with no tie to Facebook's actual social graph advantage.
Likely follow-up questions
