What this question tests
Funnel optimization thinking, addressing a contribution gate that trades off content quality against user acquisition.
How to approach it
- Clarify the goal, more reviews collected, or more users retained despite the gate, since these can conflict.
- Map the funnel, user searches for a company, hits the paywall-like gate, decides whether to write a review, then unlocks access.
- Identify the drop-off point, likely at the moment users realize they must write a review before reading any.
- Consider softer alternatives, showing a small preview or letting users view limited reviews with a stronger prompt to contribute after.
- Test a graduated model, e.g. free access to a few reviews, then a gate after that, to reduce first-visit abandonment.
- Define success metrics, review submission rate and overall reviews-viewed volume, balanced against site-wide bounce rate.
What a strong answer includes
- Recognizes the core tension, the gate drives supply of reviews but costs demand-side traffic, and proposes measuring both sides.
- Proposes a concrete test, a preview-then-gate model, instead of just removing or keeping the current hard gate.
- Segments by intent, e.g. job seekers doing quick research versus users actively job hunting who are more willing to contribute.
- Sets dual metrics, review submission rate and site-wide bounce rate, to catch a fix that helps one side while hurting the other.
Common mistakes
- Optimizing only for review volume while ignoring user drop-off and bounce rate.
- Proposing to remove the gate entirely without considering the supply-side impact on reviews.
- Not defining what to measure before and after the change.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you A/B test a softer version of this gate.
- What would you do if review quality dropped after loosening the gate.
- How would you incentivize review writing without hurting first-visit experience.
