What this question tests
Tests goal-setting for a brand-new feature launch: defining what success looks like for adoption, usage quality, and downstream engagement, not just a raw usage count.
How to approach it
- Clarify the feature's purpose: hashtags help users discover related content and help creators reach beyond their existing followers, so goals should reflect both sides.
- Propose an adoption goal: percentage of posts using at least one hashtag within the first few weeks of launch.
- Propose a discovery goal: engagement (likes, follows, saves) on content discovered specifically through hashtag browsing or search, isolating the feature's incremental value.
- Propose a quality guardrail: spam or irrelevant hashtag usage rate, since hashtags are easily abused for reach without relevance.
- Propose a longer-term goal: growth in new follows or account discovery attributable to hashtag-driven content, showing the feature helps smaller creators grow.
- Avoid setting raw hashtag usage volume as the only goal, since that alone does not prove the feature is actually helping users discover relevant content.
What a strong answer includes
- Sets goals for both sides of the feature, poster adoption and discoverer engagement, instead of only tracking how many posts include a hashtag.
- Names spam and irrelevant tagging as an explicit guardrail from day one, since hashtag abuse is a well-known failure mode on other platforms.
- Proposes a discovery-attributed engagement metric, isolating whether hashtags actually drive meaningful content discovery, not just adoption.
- Includes a creator-growth goal, tying the feature back to a real strategic benefit, helping smaller accounts get discovered.
Common mistakes
- Setting raw hashtag usage count as the only success metric, which says nothing about whether discovery is actually improving.
- Ignoring spam and abuse risk, a well-documented problem with hashtag systems on other platforms.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you detect and handle hashtag spam without discouraging genuine tagging?
- How would you know if hashtags are actually helping smaller creators get discovered, not just boosting already-popular accounts?
