What this question tests
Strategic reasoning about entering a market adjacent to the core product, plus a concrete execution plan.
How to approach it
- State the rationale: Facebook already has the social graph, photos, and interests data that dating apps must build from scratch.
- Size the opportunity against Tinder and Bumble's user base and revenue to judge if it is worth the distraction.
- Identify the advantage: cross referencing existing friends and interests to improve match quality and reduce catfishing risk.
- Address the key risk: users may not want dating mixed with their existing social identity, so keep it opt in and separate.
- Propose execution: launch inside the Facebook app as an opt in tab, seeded first in a few test markets.
- Define success metrics such as opt in rate, match to conversation rate, and conversations leading to an in person meeting.
What a strong answer includes
- Grounds the 'why' in a specific asset, the social graph, rather than a vague 'because everyone uses Facebook' argument.
- Addresses the privacy concern directly by proposing the feature stays separate from the main profile and friend list.
- Gives an illustrative launch plan, e.g. assumes piloting in 3 markets before global rollout to de-risk brand perception.
- Names a real competitor set, Tinder and Bumble, and explains the differentiation instead of ignoring them.
Common mistakes
- Not addressing the privacy tension between a dating feature and an identity based social network.
- Giving a 'why' with no specific asset or advantage named.
- Skipping execution details and stopping at 'because it makes sense strategically'.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you keep this separate from users' regular Facebook identity?
- What would your pilot markets and success bar look like?
- How do you compete with Tinder's existing network effects?
