What this question tests
Analytical segmentation and strategy: can you split a real customer base into meaningful groups and build a growth plan grounded in Wise's actual product.
How to approach it
- Anchor on Wise's core product, low cost international money transfer, and ask who uses it and why.
- Segment by use case: migrant workers sending remittances home, freelancers billing overseas clients, and small businesses paying suppliers abroad.
- For each segment, name the dominant need, price sensitivity for remittances, speed and multi currency accounts for freelancers, batch payments for businesses.
- Pick the segment with the best growth to cost ratio, for example freelancers, since they have higher transfer values and can be reached through platforms like Upwork.
- Propose a growth strategy for that segment, such as partnerships with freelance platforms and a multi currency account push.
- Define a success metric, like active users per segment and transfer volume per user.
What a strong answer includes
- Uses segment specific numbers as clearly stated assumptions, for example remittance users average 250 dollars per transfer versus 2,000 for business.
- Picks one segment to go deep on rather than spreading strategy thin across all three.
- Connects the strategy to Wise's known advantage, the mid market exchange rate and transparent fees.
Common mistakes
- Treating all Wise customers as one segment with one growth lever.
- Proposing a strategy disconnected from what actually differentiates Wise from banks.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you measure whether this segment is actually growing?
- What risk does prioritizing this segment carry for the other two?
