What this question tests

Whether the candidate can run a structured root cause analysis for an early-stage business with limited data infrastructure.

How to approach it

  1. Confirm the decline is real and not a data or reporting artifact, especially likely in a nascent business with less mature tracking.
  2. Break revenue into its components: traffic, conversion rate, and average order value, to see which lever actually dropped.
  3. Check for external factors: a seasonal dip, a new competitor promotion, or a broader market shift affecting demand.
  4. Check for internal factors: a recent site or pricing change, a marketing channel underperforming, or a stockout or fulfillment issue.
  5. Once isolated, propose a targeted fix and define a recovery metric, such as weekly revenue trending back toward the prior baseline.
