What this question tests
Tests root-cause diagnosis of a metric divergence, engagement up but supply flat, using a structured hypothesis approach.
How to approach it
- Restate the puzzle: engagement per listing is rising, but the number of new listings has stopped growing, so this is a supply problem, not a demand problem.
- Hypothesize seller-side causes: listing friction, hesitation to negotiate or ship with strangers, or sellers churning after a bad experience.
- Hypothesize saturation causes: the addressable seller base in mature markets may simply be tapped out.
- Segment listing growth by market maturity and category to see if it's a global plateau or concentrated in saturated regions.
- Check for a structural cause: a recent policy or UI change that added seller friction around the time growth stalled.
What a strong answer includes
- Correctly identifies this as a supply-side puzzle since engagement, a demand signal, is healthy while listings, a supply signal, are flat.
- Separates saturation, a capacity ceiling, from friction, a fixable UX problem, as distinct hypotheses.
- Proposes checking for a specific triggering change instead of only broad market reasoning.
Common mistakes
- Treating rising engagement as proof the whole feature is healthy without noticing the listings plateau.
- Jumping to a fix, like a seller incentive, before segmenting to find where the plateau is concentrated.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you distinguish market saturation from a fixable seller-friction problem?
- What would you test first to re-accelerate new listings?
