What this question tests
Whether you can pick two board level goals for a new marketplace product and justify the trade off between them to executives.
How to approach it
- Clarify the product's stage, assume early launch in one or two cities rather than mature nationwide.
- Propose growth: weekly active ordering users, since adoption is the first priority for a new marketplace.
- Propose a second goal, marketplace health, measured as restaurant fill rate or order completion rate, since supply quality determines retention.
- Explain why these two together, not just orders, since growth without reliable restaurants creates churn.
- Note the trade off you would flag to executives, that pushing growth too hard before supply is ready hurts the health metric.
- State what you would confirm, such as whether the launch market already has restaurant supply secured.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks goals that are genuinely in tension and says so, rather than two goals that trivially move together.
- Uses a concrete proxy, like percent of orders delivered within the promised window, instead of a vague quality goal.
- Frames the ask to executives as a sequencing decision, for example fix fill rate before pushing growth spend.
Common mistakes
- Naming only growth metrics and ignoring supply or reliability.
- Choosing two goals that do not actually require an executive trade off conversation.
Likely follow-up questions
