What this question tests
Capital allocation strategy: picking a few high leverage bets tied to the product's actual position and monetization gaps.
How to approach it
- State the current position, massive global reach, especially in emerging markets, but thin direct monetization relative to scale.
- Identify the biggest opportunity, business messaging and commerce, since businesses already use the platform informally for sales and support.
- Propose allocating the bulk of the budget there, building payments and in chat commerce infrastructure in high growth markets.
- Allocate a smaller portion to a second bet, expanding small merchant tooling for those who cannot afford enterprise CRM.
- Name the biggest risk, regulatory scrutiny around payments and data privacy across countries, and how to mitigate it.
What a strong answer includes
- Anchors the plan in the real underused asset, dominant emerging market reach combined with weak direct monetization there.
- Splits the budget with a clear majority bet, for example most on payments and commerce infrastructure and the rest on small business tooling, marked as an assumption.
- Names a specific regulatory risk, data localization and payment licensing requirements, and proposes a market by market rollout to manage it.
Common mistakes
- Spreading the budget across too many unrelated ideas with no clear primary bet.
- Ignoring the real monetization gap and proposing generic feature ideas instead.
- No mention of regulatory or privacy risk given a global, sensitive user base.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which market would you launch payments in first and why?
- How would you measure ROI on this investment after year one?
