What this question tests
Product design addressing an emotional and trust barrier rather than a purely functional gap.
How to approach it
- Clarify the specific fear, safety in an emergency, loss of control, or lack of understanding of how the car makes decisions.
- Segment buyers, cautious first-time buyers versus early adopters, since the feature should target the hesitant majority, not enthusiasts.
- Identify the core trust gap, users cannot see or understand what the car perceives and decides in real time.
- Propose a feature, an in-car visualization showing what the vehicle detects, e.g. pedestrians and other cars, so the passenger sees the car 'paying attention'.
- Add a manual override and clear takeover option, so users feel in control rather than powerless during a critical moment.
- Define success metrics, purchase intent survey lift after a test drive with the feature and a reduction in reported anxiety during rides.
What a strong answer includes
- Targets a specific emotional driver, lack of visibility into the car's perception, rather than a vague 'make it feel safer' claim.
- Proposes a concrete, buildable feature, a real-time perception visualization, not just more marketing or safety statistics.
- Balances autonomy with control, keeping an easy manual override so users do not feel trapped by the technology.
- Sets a measurable proxy for trust, e.g. pre versus post test-drive purchase intent score, marked as an assumption.
Common mistakes
- Proposing only marketing or statistics-based reassurance instead of an in-product feature.
- Ignoring that different users fear different things, e.g. loss of control versus lack of transparency.
- Not defining any way to measure whether the fear was actually reduced.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you test whether this feature actually reduces fear.
- What would you do for users who still refuse to trust the car after using this feature.
- How would you balance transparency with information overload.
