How to approach it
- Pick a specific feature or product where design and product had real tension, not just a smooth handoff story.
- Set the situation: the feature, the design constraint or disagreement, and what was at stake for the user experience.
- Describe your role in the collaboration: how you brought data or user research into design discussions rather than dictating a solution.
- Walk through how disagreement, if any, was resolved, such as a usability test, a design sprint, or a compromise on scope.
- State the shipped result and how it performed against the original design goal.
- Close with what you learned about working with design specifically, distinct from working with engineering.
What a strong answer includes
- Shows genuine back-and-forth with design, not just product handing over requirements and design executing.
- Uses a concrete resolution mechanism, like a usability test or prototype comparison, instead of just seniority winning the argument.
- States a real outcome metric tied to the shipped design, such as task completion rate or conversion.
- Distinguishes what design owned (visual and interaction decisions) from what product owned (problem framing and success metrics).
Common mistakes
- Describing a project with no real design tension, making the answer generic.
- Taking credit for design decisions that were actually the designer's call.
- Not naming a concrete outcome or resolution mechanism.
