What this question tests
Constrained ideation and prioritization: can you pick one concrete, non-health COVID-related pain point and design a scoped, buildable app around it.
How to approach it
- Brainstorm candidate pain points caused by COVID-19 beyond health: job loss/income disruption, isolation/loneliness, remote-work productivity, and small business survival.
- Pick one to focus on, e.g. helping laid-off workers find new short-term or gig income quickly, since this is a concrete, urgent, non-health need.
- Define the user: someone who lost income and needs fast, flexible earning opportunities, possibly outside their original field.
- Propose the design: an aggregator matching users to nearby gig/temporary roles (grocery delivery, local business help) based on their existing skills and availability.
- Address trust and speed: fast onboarding/verification since users need income urgently, balanced against employer trust needs.
- Define success: time from signup to first paid opportunity, and user income recovered through the platform.
What a strong answer includes
- Picks one specific, concrete pain point (income loss) instead of a vague general 'help with COVID' app.
- Explains why this pain point over others, connecting it to real urgency people faced during the pandemic.
- Designs the onboarding to be fast given the urgency of the user's need, a thoughtful, situation-specific design choice.
- Chooses a success metric (time-to-first-paid-opportunity) tied directly to the real user outcome, not just app downloads.
Common mistakes
- Listing many shallow ideas across every COVID-related pain point instead of picking and going deep on one.
- Ignoring the explicit instruction that the app doesn't need to be health-related, and defaulting to a health-tracking app anyway.
