What this question tests
Disruptive product-strategy thinking: identifying a structural weakness in an incumbent's model rather than incrementally improving it.
How to approach it
- Identify a structural weakness in the incumbent food-delivery model, e.g. high delivery fees and driver-availability inconsistency, both stemming from a per-order, on-demand gig-driver model.
- Propose a structurally different model, e.g. a neighborhood-based subscription service using pre-scheduled batch delivery routes (grouping nearby orders) to cut per-order delivery cost significantly.
- Explain why this is disruptive rather than incremental: it trades some delivery-speed flexibility for meaningfully lower, more predictable pricing, appealing to a price-sensitive segment underserved by current on-demand apps.
- Address restaurant-side economics: lower delivery cost could mean a better commission structure for restaurants, a genuine pain point with current platforms.
- Define success as subscriber retention and cost-per-delivery versus incumbent platforms, the core proof point for the disruption thesis.
What a strong answer includes
- Identifies a genuine structural cost driver (on-demand, per-order gig delivery) rather than proposing a superficial feature tweak.
- Explains the classic disruption trade-off explicitly: trading speed for cost, targeting an underserved price-sensitive segment.
- Addresses the restaurant side, not just consumers, since a two-sided platform's disruption needs to work for both.
Common mistakes
- Proposing an incremental UX improvement to an existing app instead of a structurally different, disruptive model.
- Only addressing the consumer side and ignoring restaurant economics, which determine whether restaurants would even join a new platform.
