What this question tests
Whether you can reason about a real tension between user growth and ad load, and propose a way to balance them.
How to approach it
- Clarify the tension: more ad inventory and targeting can boost revenue but degrades user experience and can slow growth.
- Identify the metrics in conflict: ad revenue per user versus engagement or retention metrics sensitive to ad load.
- Segment by user type: heavy users may tolerate more ads than new users still forming a habit.
- Propose a framework: protect new-user experience with lighter ad load, and increase load gradually as engagement and habit strengthen.
- Use guardrail metrics, like session frequency or churn, to cap how far ad load can increase before pulling back.
- Recommend testing ad load changes on a subset of users before a full rollout to catch retention damage early.
What a strong answer includes
- Frames it as a two-metric tradeoff, revenue per user versus retention, instead of treating growth and ads as unrelated.
- Proposes protecting new users specifically, since early experience most affects long-term retention.
- Gives an illustrative number, assuming ad load above a certain frequency per session measurably hurts day-7 retention.
- Names a concrete guardrail metric and a rollback trigger, not just a general call for balance.
Common mistakes
- Treating this as a values statement instead of proposing a measurable framework with guardrails.
- Ignoring that different user segments have very different tolerance for ad load.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you decide the guardrail threshold for acceptable retention loss?
- What would you do if a market's ad revenue targets required exceeding that guardrail?
