What this question tests
Long term product sustainability thinking, going beyond initial launch success to what keeps a product alive and relevant for years.
How to approach it
- Clarify the product category, since sustainability drivers differ for a consumer app versus a B2B tool.
- Identify the core retention driver: does the product solve a recurring, not one time, need.
- Assess the moat: network effects, data advantage, or switching costs that protect it from being copied.
- Assess the business model: does revenue scale with usage in a way that funds ongoing investment.
- Propose a plan to keep evolving the product based on user feedback and changing market needs.
- Define success with long term retention curves and a stable or growing unit economics picture.
What a strong answer includes
- Frames sustainability around a recurring need and a real defensive moat, not just initial product market fit.
- Names specific moat types, network effects or switching costs, rather than a vague 'strong product' claim.
- Ties sustainability to unit economics, since a product can retain users but still be financially unsustainable.
- Proposes an ongoing evolution plan, since a static product naturally loses relevance over time.
Common mistakes
- Focuses only on launch metrics and ignores what happens after the initial excitement fades.
- Ignores the business model and whether growth is financially sustainable long term.
