What this question tests
Ability to define success for a foundational, high-frequency feature with both usage and quality dimensions.
How to approach it
- Clarify the feature's job: letting users capture and share visual moments easily and reliably.
- Define a usage metric: photos uploaded per active user per week, reflecting how central the feature is to the experience.
- Define a reliability metric: upload success rate and average upload time, since failed or slow uploads directly frustrate users.
- Define an engagement metric: reactions and comments received per uploaded photo, since social feedback drives continued sharing.
- Set a guardrail: report rate on uploaded photos, ensuring growth in uploads doesn't come with rising policy violations.
What a strong answer includes
- Leads with upload success rate as a reliability guardrail, recognizing that a broken core action undermines any usage growth.
- Names social feedback (reactions, comments) as the engagement signal that predicts continued uploading behavior.
- Gives an illustrative benchmark, e.g. 99% upload success within 5 seconds on average, marked as an assumption.
- Flags report rate as a guardrail against the feature being misused for harmful content at scale.
Common mistakes
- Measuring only upload volume without any reliability or quality guardrail.
- Ignoring that a basic, high-frequency feature's biggest risk is technical failure, not feature gaps.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you do if upload volume was high but success rate was falling?
- How would you segment this metric by connection quality or region?
