What this question tests
Ability to explain a product's core value proposition in plain language and translate it into a small set of health metrics.
How to approach it
- Frame YouTube simply: a two-sided marketplace where anyone can upload video and anyone can watch for free, monetized by ads.
- Identify the stakeholder groups whose health matters: viewers, creators, advertisers.
- Pick an engagement metric, like watch time per viewer, reflecting value delivered to viewers.
- Pick a supply-side metric, like active uploading creators or creator revenue, reflecting creator-side health.
- Pick a monetization metric, like ad revenue per hour watched, reflecting business health.
- Explain why watch time, not raw view count, is the right engagement metric for a video platform.
What a strong answer includes
- Explains YouTube in one plain sentence, then layers in nuance about recommendations and monetization.
- Chooses metrics that intentionally trade off, e.g. watch time vs. content quality, showing awareness of gaming risk.
- Gives an illustrative number, like average daily watch time per DAU, clearly marked as an assumption.
Common mistakes
- Picking only vanity metrics like total views or uploads with no monetization or creator-health metric.
- Overcomplicating the explanation with jargon when the question asks for simplicity.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which of these three metrics would you prioritize if you could only pick one?
- How would you detect if watch time is being gamed by clickbait or autoplay?
