What this question tests
Ability to reason about a large company's competitive position, growth options, and risk at a CEO level of scope.
How to approach it
- State the current position: Netflix leads subscription streaming but faces password sharing limits, ad tier maturity, and competition from Disney+, Amazon, and YouTube.
- Identify core assets: recommendation data, a global content pipeline, brand trust, and ad tier infrastructure.
- Lay out two or three strategic options, for example deepening live sports, expanding gaming, or growing the ad business internationally.
- Pick a recommended direction and justify it against Netflix's advantage versus competitors.
- Name the biggest risk to the plan, for example content cost inflation, and how to mitigate it.
What a strong answer includes
- Anchors the recommendation in a specific advantage, Netflix's large subscriber base and recommendation engine, instead of generic innovation language.
- Picks one primary bet, scaling the ad tier and live events, over spreading thin across gaming and merchandise.
- Quantifies impact directionally, for example the ad tier adding low double digit revenue growth, clearly marked as an assumption.
- Addresses churn and content cost as the key risks and proposes local language originals as mitigation.
Common mistakes
- Giving a list of unrelated ideas with no single recommendation.
- Ignoring Netflix's actual current initiatives around ads and live sports.
- No mention of financial or competitive risk.
Likely follow-up questions
- Which of these bets would you kill first if it underperformed?
- How would you measure success of the live sports bet after year one?
