What this question tests
Strategic roadmap thinking for a post-MVP product, sequencing investment across retention, growth, and monetization.
How to approach it
- Clarify the current state, what the MVP does today and what early usage data shows about where users struggle.
- Identify the core jobs to be done, quick capture, organization and search, and cross-device sync, and assess which is weakest today.
- Prioritize near-term work, likely fixing core reliability and sync, since a note app users cannot trust to save their notes will churn fast.
- Sequence mid-term work, search and organization improvements, e.g. tags or AI-assisted summarization, once the core loop is solid.
- Sequence long-term work, collaboration or monetization, e.g. shared notebooks or a premium tier, once retention is proven.
- Define success metrics per phase, day 7 retention for the reliability phase and weekly active note creation for the growth phase.
What a strong answer includes
- Sequences the roadmap by dependency, fixing core reliability before layering growth or monetization features on an unstable base.
- Names concrete phase 1 work, sync reliability and offline support, rather than jumping straight to exciting features like AI summarization.
- Ties each roadmap phase to a specific metric, e.g. day 7 retention before growth phase, growth phase before monetization phase.
- Explicitly flags what would be deprioritized, e.g. collaboration features, until the core single-user experience is solid.
Common mistakes
- Jumping straight to advanced features like AI or collaboration before the core product is reliable.
- Proposing an unordered feature list instead of a sequenced roadmap with dependencies.
- Not defining what data or metric would gate moving to the next phase.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you cut if you only had one quarter.
- How would you decide when the product is ready for a monetization phase.
- What metric would tell you the MVP has product-market fit.
