What this question tests

Tests weighing conversion-rate gains from reduced friction against the real costs of losing a logged-in customer relationship.

How to approach it

  1. Name the tradeoff directly: guest checkout likely raises conversion by removing a login barrier, but loses email capture, order history and retargeting ability for that customer.
  2. Consider the fraud and support angle: logged-out orders are harder to verify and support if a dispute or return arises later.
  3. Propose a middle path: allow guest checkout but prompt for lightweight account creation immediately after purchase, when the user already has purchase intent and is entering payment details anyway.
  4. Test this with an A/B experiment, comparing checkout completion rate for guest-allowed against login-required, and measuring downstream repeat purchase rate for each group.
  5. Decide based on the net effect: if guest checkout lifts first-purchase conversion without meaningfully hurting repeat purchase rate, allow it with the post-purchase account prompt.
