What this question tests
Tests whether a candidate can translate product goals into the concrete artifact a leadership team actually reviews: a monthly business review with real metrics and narrative.
How to approach it
- Pick a product you know well and state its primary goal in one sentence, such as growing habitual usage or driving a specific business outcome.
- Break the goal into 2 to 3 supporting metrics, such as activation rate, retention, and revenue or engagement depth.
- Structure the MBR deck: headline number and trend, wins and misses versus target, root cause of any miss, and the plan for next month.
- Include a competitive or market slide only if it changes a decision, not as filler.
- State what leadership needs to decide or unblock, such as budget, a hiring ask, or a trade off between two initiatives.
- Close with next month's committed targets so the deck creates accountability, not just a status update.
What a strong answer includes
- Anchors the whole deck around one headline metric leadership already recognizes, instead of a wall of unrelated charts.
- Includes an explicit 'why we missed' section with root cause, since leadership decks are judged on honesty about misses as much as wins.
- Ends with a specific ask (budget, headcount, a decision) rather than just reporting numbers with no action requested.
- Uses illustrative but clearly-labeled example numbers, such as a 5 percent miss on activation tied to a specific onboarding step.
Common mistakes
- Building a deck that is purely a status report with no ask or decision needed from leadership.
- Picking vanity metrics that do not connect to the stated product goal.
Likely follow-up questions
- What would you do differently if you missed the same target two months in a row?
- How do you decide which metrics are important enough for the monthly review versus a weekly dashboard?
