What this question tests
Product improvement skill for a familiar physical service, requiring a specific pain point instead of generic suggestions.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific airport you know well to ground the answer in real, checkable detail rather than a generic airport.
- Segment travelers: business travelers valuing speed, leisure travelers more tolerant of wait, and connecting passengers under time pressure.
- Identify the sharpest pain point, for example unpredictable security wait times causing travelers to arrive overly early or nearly miss flights.
- Prioritize connecting and time-pressured travelers, since unpredictability there creates the most stress and the clearest opportunity.
- Propose a solution: real-time, accurate security wait-time predictions shown in the airport app and at terminal entrances.
- Define success: reduction in variance between predicted and actual wait times, and traveler-reported stress or missed-flight incidents.
What a strong answer includes
- Names a specific real airport and a specific, verifiable pain point rather than generic "make it nicer."
- Segments travelers by need and picks the segment where the fix matters most.
- Proposes a concrete, technically feasible solution grounded in what other airports already pilot.
- Uses prediction accuracy and traveler stress or missed-flight rate as meaningful, specific success metrics.
Common mistakes
- Giving a generic wishlist with no prioritization or pain point focus.
- Not naming a specific airport, making the answer harder to ground in specifics.
- Ignoring how success would be measured.
Likely follow-up questions
- How would you source accurate real-time security wait data?
- How would you handle the tradeoff between airport operations and traveler-facing transparency?
- What would you do if predictions were often wrong?
