What this question tests
Tests customer empathy and research process: can the candidate show a real, specific instance of correctly identifying an unstated customer need.
How to approach it
- Pick a specific instance where you uncovered a need customers had not explicitly stated in a feature request.
- Describe the research method used, such as direct interviews, usage data analysis, or observing actual behavior rather than surveys alone.
- Explain the gap between what was asked for and what was actually needed, and how you identified it.
- Describe what you built or proposed in response and why it addressed the real need better than the stated request.
- State the measurable or clearly framed outcome that validated the need was real.
- Explain the rationale for why this approach, not luck, led to success.
What a strong answer includes
- Identifies a genuine gap between a stated request and the underlying need, discovered through direct observation or interviews rather than assumption.
- Describes a concrete research method, such as watching users complete a task rather than only asking them what they wanted.
- Explains the resulting decision clearly, building something different from the literal request because it better solved the underlying problem.
- Backs the success claim with a measurable or clearly illustrative outcome, such as adoption or satisfaction improving after the change shipped.
Common mistakes
- Describing a feature request that was simply built as asked, without any real gap between stated and actual need.
- Giving a vague, unfalsifiable claim of success without any evidence the identified need was actually correct.
Likely follow-up questions
- How did you validate the need before committing engineering resources?
- What would you have done if the data had contradicted your hypothesis about the need?
