What this question tests

Ability to explain past product work clearly and connect design decisions to user needs and outcomes.

Pick one product you have real depth on, not the most impressive-sounding one, so you can answer follow ups confidently.
State the user problem the design system solved, e.g. inconsistent UI slowing down engineering and confusing users across surfaces.
Describe the key components, the token system, shared component library, and governance process for updates.
Explain a specific tradeoff you made, e.g. flexibility for teams versus strict consistency, and why you chose as you did.
Share the outcome with a concrete metric, e.g. faster feature shipping time or reduced design-related bugs.
Note what you would do differently in hindsight, showing reflection rather than a purely polished narrative.

Grounds the story in a real, specific product with named components, not a generic description of what a design system is.
Names a genuine tradeoff and the reasoning behind it, showing judgment rather than reciting a textbook definition.
Includes a measurable outcome, e.g. reduced time to ship new UI or fewer inconsistency bugs, as evidence of impact.
Shows honest reflection on what could have gone better, which signals maturity over a purely self-congratulatory answer.

Giving a textbook definition of a design system instead of a real personal story.
Not mentioning any concrete outcome or metric.
Avoiding any tradeoff or difficulty, making the story sound too easy.
